A new way of buying food is coming to Hammersmith & Fulham.
As seen in the BBC, The Guardian and The Observer Monthly, The Food Assembly is a local initiative that brings people together to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and food makers.
Starting from March 2017, every week, Food Assembly customers in Hammersmith and Fulham will be able to order grocery online from local food producers before picking it up weekly at a local venue, the Crabtree. All the food comes from an average distance of 28 miles and travels less than 2 hours, compared to the 600 miles with a supermarket.
Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly – it connects neighbours to farmers, neighbours to each other, and everyone to their food. By choosing to buy local, shoppers can support the communities of Hammersmith, Fulham and around, as for every £1 spent through Hammersmith Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy.
It also ensures your money reaches the right people; food producers keep over 80% of sales for every product sold, compared to 15%-25% through supermarkets. Furthermore, there is less food waste as all the food is ordered in advance and less packaging waste, as it doesn’t need to be packed for long travel.
Whether from their iPhone app or laptop, weekly shoppers can choose from unique local products, such as locally-made artisan cakes from Fulham-based Breadren; colourful hummus made out of unwanted veg from Fulham-based ChicP; delicious fresh sourdough breads from (Fulham-based) Ma Baker, cold-pressed juice from Brambletye Fruit Farm… Not to forget plenty of fresh and locally grown or produced vegetables, fruits, cheeses, milk, beers, wines and more.
The Hammersmith Food Assembly is organised by food-obsessed Floriane Malot, also behind Putney Food Assembly , who loves to share her passion with others.
“I love the idea that I can buy products online and still meet the producers, with a 100% transparent supply chain and very little transportation… Besides, having tried many of the products that we will have, I can confirm that they are truly delicious and fresh”
The Hammersmith Assembly will hold a special Tasting for its opening, on 30th March 2017, whilst the online market will be opening mid-March. The venue is The Crabtree, Rainville Road, London W6 9HA. Locals can meet farmers, foodmakers and their neighbours, taste local food samples and be sure of where their food comes from.
The online market will be launching mid-March, and collections will take place from 14:30 to 16:00 every Thursday at the Crabtree.
